The mine that saved USD$3.6million

When we were approached by a DRC mining client, they were at the
beginning stages of putting a tyre program together. Over the past few
years, the mine had just replaced damaged tyres with little or no consideration for repairing them.

The new tyre manager, quickly implemented some new procedures and
with our help, installed a complete OTR tyre repair workshop.

Over 2 months tyres were collected from all over site and a total of 400 tyres (mostly 29.5R25) were documented and assessed for repair.

The repair team repaired 40 tyres a month over the next 10 months and put them back into service. For that entire year only 30 new tyres were purchased, a small fraction of their historical tyre budget.

The following year, the repair workshop was able to repair tyres as soon
as they were damaged and quickly return them to service.

This meant the mine could afford to keep a small stockpile of new tyres, but run their existing rolling stock for longer, maximizing the life of each tyre.

Importantly, the mine’s stockpile of repaired tyres was inventoried by type and remaining tread life. This meant they could quickly replace a tyre and match it up with the remaining tyres, keeping load distribution even and tread wear consistent.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the supply of new tyres is sporadic.  Very high duties on tyres, transport and border delays add significant costs by the time they reach their destination.  Our client was able to ride out these challenges by ensuring they always kept the repair workshop turning out quality, reliable repairs.
